Vacation Bible School

In the small Southern town where I grew up, many opportunities for Vacation Bible School were offered. 

Rather than compete, the various denominations scheduled VBS on different weeks, allowing us kids to go from church to church throughout the summer.

I wish I could tell you I went for the bible stories, but I confess the fun & the treats were the draw.  I believe my love of crafting took root there.  And who doesn’t love snack time?

However, little bits of learning did seep in.  I STILL sing the books of the bible in my head when my pastor announces his text, and I learned that at VBS.

The very first solo I ever sang in church occurred at one of the Sunday night commencement services at Vacation Bible School. I learned this song from other bible schools attended that summer.

That little 9 y. o. girl didn’t fully understand the Truth she sang that night, but the teenager who accepted Christ to be her Savior a few years later sure did. 

The hymn went like this…“In times like these, you need a Savior.  In times like these, you need an anchor.  Be very sure, be very sure, your anchor holds & grips the solid Rock. This Rock is Jesus, yes, He’s the one.  This Rock is Jesus, the ONLY one. Be very sure, be very sure, your anchor holds & grips the solid Rock.”

I’m sharing today my recipe for Crispy Rice treats.  I once made these for over 500 Vacation Bible School kids at my church.  Of course, I had a little help from my friends.  It was great fun! 

In times like these, kids AND grown-ups need a Savior.  I am so grateful for the truths I learned at Vacation Bible School.

CRISPY CEREAL TREATS 

19 c. Crispy rice cereal
1-3/4 c. light corn syrup

2 c. brown sugar
1 (14-oz.) can sweetened condensed milk

1 c. butter (NOT evaporated milk)
In a large sauce pan, mix brown sugar, butter and corn syrup and bring to a boil. Boil
3 minutes, remove from heat. Add sweetened condensed milk and boil for another 3
minutes. Pour over cereal and mix well. Press into pan sprayed with non-stick
cooking spray. Cool until firm. Cut into squares.
Note: I found this recipe several years ago while living in Virginia. My children were
preschool at the time and over the years, this recipe has found it’s way into many class
parties and bake sales. You can add colorful candies or sprinkles while the mixture is
still sticky, but not hot.
