Every so often I sit back and rethink my goals and my activities. Are they lining up? Am I doing what God wants me to do? Is there something that needs to be eliminated, something added?
I was feeling rather stagnant in my decision-making when my friend Wayne, who loves to teach using acrostics as a memory tool, gave me perspective. He told me I need to think about shape-S.H.A.P.E.
S is for spiritual gifts. God has gifted each of His children with a spiritual gift that is to be used to bring the glory back to Him. Some of these are teaching, evangelism, organization, serving, giving, showing mercy, preaching, and encouraging others. There are books and online tools dedicated to help you discover yours.
H is for heart. Heart is simply doing what you love to do in the context of serving the Lord. I love to cook and show hospitality to others. This very thing led to this segment and a weekly column in my local newspaper.
A is for abilities. What are you good at doing? My friend, John, keeps the vehicles running for our bus ministry at church. He also fixes the cars of our staffers who are having problems. He is a talented mechanic.
P is for personality. Knowing who you are and being comfortable in your own skin comes into play as we give our best self to the Lord. However, keep in mind the Lord can take a once agoraphobic introvert and lead her gently to a platform where she speaks and ministers to a full auditorium of women. E is for experiences. Our personal encounters in life translate to helping others who are walking a path we have already been on. Titus 2 says the older women should be teaching the younger how to love their husbands and children and how to run their households.
It’s time for us all to get into S.H.A.P.E.
